Connect with the three Worlds

AUM CHANTING AT CEREBROSPINAL CHAKRAS

PRAYER

O Eternal and Infinite Cosmos may the magic wand of my meditation touch all sounds and melt them into the One Cosmic Sound of Aum.

IMPORTANCE OF AUM

“And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder: and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps” (Revelation 14:2, Bible).

These different sounds are vibratory variations of the one Cosmic Sound. Variations of the Aum sound emanate from the various cerebrospinal centres. All of these sounds will come to you by Seven Chakrasand by, through regular, deep practice of the Aum Meditation. The four lower centres in the cerebrospinal axis control the elements in man of earth, water, fire, and air. The vibratory activities of each centre produce a characteristic sound. In meditation the yogi may hear first the hum, as of a bumblebee, emitted by the earth or coccygeal centre (the muladhar chakra) at the base of the spine. The water or sacral centre (the swadhishthan) has a flutelike sound; the fire or lumbar centre (the manipur) a arplike sound; and the air or dorsal centre (the anahat) a bell-like sound. The etheric or cervical centre (the vishuddha chakra), at the base of the neck where it joins the spine, emanates a sound as of rushing waters; and at the medulla oblongata the deeply meditating yogi hears the symphony of all sounds together — the oceanic roar of the Cosmic Aum Vibration. It is this symphony of sound that you are striving to hear, above all, when you practise the Aum Meditation.

PRACTISE

Mentally chant Aum (3-5 times) at each chakra, starting at Muladhar and going up to the Sahasrara. And then follow the spinal route down to the base while chanting Aum at each chakra. Do this exercise for 5-10 minutes, and always end at the Anahat or Sahasrara.

Let the mental chanting of Aum and the holding of the eyes in the upturned position be done automatically — without mental effort. All your concentration should be on feeling the spinal chakras, developing an intimacy with them and later listening to the different vibratory emanations from various chakras that you may gradually intuit.

You may like to play a harmonium and chant OM aloud at the various chakras; at the second stage you may chant softly and finally whisper chanting… Now stop using the harmonium, and just flow into the OM meditation. For those not conversant with harmonium, we are providing simplified notations for practise.

Harmonium Keys

While chanting Aum, be it aloud, soft, whisper or mentally only, melt into the OM vibration. Be aware that OM sound, this sacred reverberation connects all three worlds. As the practitioner purifies his or her consciousness, this simple practice will unfold layers after layers of bliss.

AFFIRMATION

I am the Cosmic Ocean of sound and the little wave of the body vibration in it.
